Brief History of the Department
The department of Kannada established in the year 1968, ever since the beginning of this college. The historical development of this department have crossed more than four decades and with the innumerable academic scholars have served and nurtured this dept. through the ages. We are deeply involved in promoting the Kannada language and literature through different academic activities. The main vision of this department is to induce language and literary sensibilities in our students were mainly from rural environment. The faculty members are working hard for the developments of academic excellence of the students. In order to comply with our main intention of imparting knowledge and overall personality development of the students, organizing seminars, guest lectures by scholars, group discussions, discourses regularly as a result of this endeavor department awarded with good results in every examinations conducted by University of Mysore.
It may be right context to remember a few faculty members who has served in this department and paved the way for its significant achievements, for the past five years; Dr. Sarojammanni, Prof. H.P. Gangadharaswamy, Dr. A. Gayathri, Sri. Krishnappa, Sri. Mahendra Murthy, Gulappaswamy, Shwetha G M, Sowmya G M, Poornimal S and Pushpalatha J.

The department of Kannada has maintained its own library with 100 titles other than in the general library of the college. There are more than 7560 titles in general library of the college. The books on the stack are of different genres of Kannada literature, and linguistics. The Department also procures academic journals and literary magazines 17 in nos. for the purpose of updating knowledge of our students.

The department offers Language Kannada for B.A (H.E.P, K.E.G), B.Sc (P.C.M, P.M.Cs), B.Com and B.B.A Courses and Optional Kannada for I B.A (K.E.G).
I Semester – Language Kannada, Modern Kannada Poetry, Essays, Official Kannada.
II Semester – Modern Kannada Poetry, Short Stories, Official Kannada.
III Semester – Medieval Kannada Poetry, Novel, Official Kannada.
IV Semester – Old Kannada Poetry, Old drama, Official Kannada.
I and II Semester – History of Kannada Literature, Modern Poetry and Modern Drama.
III and IV Semester – Old Kannada Grammar, Shabdhamani Dharpanam and Medieval Poetry.
V and VI Semester – Old Kannada Texts, Indian poetics and critics,
Kannada Bhasha Charithre, Chandassu. (Note: Syllabus as per the University of Mysore)
Apart from classroom teaching students are motivated to participate in the programs like symposium, Special lecturers etc., for the enrichment of their Knowledge. Special lectures have been arranged for the students by various resource persons. Faculty members also participated in several programs as representatives.

In every academic year a charitable guest lecturer and also a special lecture, Workshops on appreciation of literary works, Young students Poets meet will be organized every year. To encourage the students writing efficiency and their expressions organized the special lecture, student’s seminar and quiz competitions are organized. To educate, enrich knowledge and to explore the creativity of the student’s wall magazine is in use from many years. Award of cash prize also instituted to encourage the meritorious students who have scored highest percentage of marks both in language and literature.
A Special program has organized by the department with the collaboration of Kannada Pustaka Pradikara, Bangalore “Nanna Mechina Pustaka” on 11-01-2020. Dr.
H.R. Ravikumar, Govt. First Grade College, Gundlupete was the Judge for the program.
